Dry outlast Bearcats to go up two games in series

- TRURO

The Truro Bearcats appeared ready to deadlock their championship series with the Dartmouth Moosehead Dry Monday night, but in the end it was the Dry who prevailed 4-1 in a close, hard-fought contest.

The Dry now hold a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League championship, with game 5 slated for tonight in Dartmouth at 7:30 p.m.

Things looked promising at the TAAC Grounds Monday after starter John Chapman got out of a first inning, bases loaded, one-out jam to Dartmouth scoreless.

In the bottom of the inning, the Bearcats pushed across a run after Jeff Chisholm got aboard, laying down a perfect bunt single. Guy Pellerine doubled to move Chisholm to third and he scored a fielder’s choice.

The Bearcats took the 1-0 lead to the fifth. The Dry loaded the bases up again with none out and the Bearcats did well to give up just one run. Matt Harding crossed the plate when Dave Wallace hit into a fielder’s choice, making it 1-1. hold

Truro managed to get runners on base but was taken out of both the fifth and sixth innings on ground-ball double plays.

Jason Mosher came on in relief of starter Justin Davies to face the Bearcats in the bottom of the seventh, fanning two and getting the third out on a fly ball.

In the eighth, Dartmouth went up 2-1 with two out when Bill Hartley singled to drive in Anthony McKinley. The Dry added two more runs to go ahead 4-1.

In the bottom of the ninth, Dan Bates had a lead-off single and with two out, Justin Morton got aboard with a single but that was all for Truro.

Dartmouth had 10 hits to Truro’s nine. Mosher took the win on the mound and Chapman, who went the distance for Truro, took the loss. The Bearcats committed three errors.

As well as Pellerine’s double, Chisholm and Morton each had a pair of singles.

For the Dry, Justin Stephens had three singles and Chris Head had a pair of singles.

Game 6, if necessary, will be played at the TAAC Grounds Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
