With the fall season finally upon us, our produce department has started to fill with a variety of beautiful fresh locally grown apples. Did you know there are more than 40 apple varieties that are grown in Nova Scotia? There is an apple to suit everyone’s taste – the Mcintosh being the most popular of them all.

Eating a variety of fruit and vegetables is essential to an overall healthy lifestyle as these foods provide the body with the nutrients necessary for optimal health. While the saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is just an old wives’ tale, apples do provide quality nutrition that can positively contribute to your health. One medium-sized apple contains approximately 5g of fibre! This means this crunchy sweet fruit is an excellent source of fibre for the average healthy adult who needs about 21-38g per day. I mustn’t forget to mention that apples are also high in Vitamin C, and have only about 80 calories a serving!

Not only are apples good for you but they are a very versatile fruit. They make a delicious snack on their own or combined with some nut butter. Try making your own applesauce for an easy snack or to use as a fat-free substitute in baked goods. Thinly sliced apples also go great on your favourite chicken salad sandwich or in a grilled cheese paired with a nice sharp cheddar cheese. You can even dice up a favourite variety of apple to add just the right amount of sweetness to salads, pureed soups or even on top of your oatmeal in the morning. Don’t be afraid to get creative!

Still unsure what to do with apples? It you wanting a quick simple breakfast or snack, try this simple apple stack! The combination of protein and fibre in this recipe will keep you feeling satisfied until lunchtime.

If you are on the lookout for food grown close to home, don’t forget to support your local farmers by choosing local apples. Be sure to check out the New Glasgow Superstore for your favourite in-season produce (look for the Grown Near You signs in-store). You’ll be sure to get the best off-the-farm fresh fruits and vegetables, and your body will enjoy all of the quality nutrients as much as you will the great taste!
