Alton donates rescue boat to Stewiacke fire department
Stewiacke firefighters receive new rescue craft.
A local fire department now has access to a rescue boat.
The Stewiacke and District Volunteer Fire Department was recipient of the boat, courtesy of funds through Alton Natural Gas Storage Project for the boat, outboard motor and trailer.
“The boat will help us as volunteer firefighters to we’ll be better able to respond to calls to help the public,” said fire chief Brent Murdock in a press release.
Three trained volunteer firefighters will be involved in any rescue operations – one to run the boat, with two helping with the rescue. Firefighters on shore will also provide support.
The boat, said Murdock, gives a new aspect to training for members, which may also help recruit new volunteers interested in water rescue. The department is in the process of acquiring waterproof suits and
safety gear related to boat operation.
The boat, while donated Oct. 12, isn’t in operation yet; it won’t be until training has taken place.
Prior to the donation, which is valued around $7,500, any water rescues within the coverage area of the fire department including the Stewiacke and Shubenacadie rivers required
an assistance call from a neighbouring department.
Charles Lyons, vice-president of environment, health and safety for ALTAGAS, parent company of the Alton project, said they’re pleased they were able to make the donation.
“Helping volunteer firefighters in our operating areas is an investment in community safety for everyone,” he said.
