The people of Truro have been donating a few skates for use at the new downtown ice surface.

Shannon Jarvis, active community co-ordinator with the Town of Truro, said so far people have dropped off 32 pairs at the recreation offices on Douglas Street.

She wasn’t aware at press time just how many had been received at the other three locations in town.

“Our goal is to gather enough skates to loan to anyone needing a pair, free of charge,” said Jarvis. “We want all residents to be able to use the facility.”

The new ice surface opened Sunday, but staff aren’t quite ready to start lending skates – they have begun cataloguing them and then will need to sharpen them and do other maintenance.

“If anyone has skates in the basement that no longer fit, are collecting dust and taking up space, this is a chance to clear out the clutter and put them to good use,” said Jarvis. “Children, youth and inexperienced skaters will all benefit from a donation.”

The town also lends crosscountry skis and snowshoes at their Douglas Street location.

Both the Municipality of Colchester and the Village of Bible Hill also lend snowshoes.

The town’s skate drive will continue until the end of February. Jarvis says the skates collected this year will be stored and made available for use again in coming years.
