‘The Vagina Monologues’ on stage in Truro Saturday
TRURO, N.S.
It’s not a subject everyone is comfortable discussing.
However, talking about vaginas doesn’t embarrass a group of local performers – including four teens – who will be on stage for “The Vagina Monologues” Saturday evening.
“I love vaginas; I think they’re very beautiful and super powerful,” said Brooklyn Connolly. “I think feminism is a very powerful movement that should keep going.”
She said being involved in the Monologues helps her step out of her comfort zone.
Grace Taylor first took part in the show when she was six – appropriately, playing a six-yearold girl – but she went through a stage when she wouldn’t have been comfortable being involved.
“There was a point in my life where I’d rather die than talk about vaginas but I’m really enjoying this. We laugh and we’re sad together. It’s like a little community.”
Eris Cajolais isn’t the only member of her family who will be on stage; her mother is also performing.
“I’m not uncomfortable talking about vaginas,” she said. “I’m very open to talking about my body. This show’s important to me because it’s about connecting with the community.”
Although she’s never given birth, that’s the subject of Lily Taylor-Stackhouse’s monologue, so she’s been researching by watching videos.
“I love the monologue,” she said. “It’s poetic and beautifully written.”
She said her mother always encouraged her to be comfortable with her body and she’s pleased to be part of the show.
“The Vagina Monologues” is directed by Beth Terry and Stephanie MacArthur and will be staged in the auditorium of the Cobequid Educational Centre at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Tickets are available at MacQuarries on the Esplanade for $20 ($15 for students). For more information call 902-890-2509 or email vdaytruro2017@gmail. com.
