Book Nook shuts down after 34 years in Truro

Friday marked the last chance customers had to stock up on reading at the Book Nook as the business closed following a 34-year history in Truro.

Sheila MacAulay, who has owned the shop for the 10 years, closed the little store at the north end of Dominion Street for good Friday afternoon.

“I’ve just started into being a grandmother; we have a granddaughter in Calgary we like to visit and we have two more coming soon, one at the end of March and one in April,” says MacAulay. “It’s hard to run a business when you’re not here.”

Ada Mingo opened the store in 1982 in the building her husband Bob had bought for his growing music business in 1971. Originally, the Book Nook sold both new and used books

but has for years sold only used books.

MacAulay’s daughter Christy worked part time for Mingo when she was a student in school. After Christy left to travel the world she sent postcards to Mingo and those still decorate the wall behind the cash.

When Christy left in 2000, she encouraged her mother to start working at the bookstore.

“And I’ve been here ever since,” said Sheila.

After Mingo passed away in 2006, MacAulay bought the store.

MacAulay was expecting two buyers Friday who planned to buy a large number of books, but by no means the majority of them. Whatever’s left, MacAulay planned to donate to the Kinsmen Club of Bible Hill for

their book sale.

“It’s going to be tough. I’ve worked here for 18 years. I’m going to miss it,” said MacAulay. “And it will be missed. People have always told me we had a good selection of books – something for everyone.”
