Son will don the ‘C’ as he takes to the ice with team
Brody Schmitt will wear the ‘C’ tonight for the Midget A Stuart Kia Bearcats in a game being played in Truro in memory of his father, Mike
When Brody Schmitt skates onto the ice tonight he’ll be playing for more than just the love of hockey; he’ll be playing to help fight cancer and in memory of his father.
The proceeds from the Midget X Stuart Kia Bearcats game against Antigonish will go to the We Care About Cancer Fund in memory of Brody’s father, Mike Schmitt, who had pancreatic cancer. Mike Schmitt coached Brody, and most of his teammates, until his death two years ago.
“I think it might be tough at the start,” said Brody, who is a 15-year-old forward. “Once we start playing we’ll be focused and it’ll be fun.
Brody began playing hockey when he was very young and feels it has provided a lot of benefits.
“You learn about team play, discipline and respect,” he said. “You make a lot of friends and they stick through life. You invest a lot of time in it but it’s worth it.”
This is the second year the game has been held in memory of Mike Schmitt but the first year Brody has played in it, and his teammates decided he should wear the captain’s jersey for the night. “It’s pretty important to me to play in this and keep his memory alive,” Brody added.
The game is being held at the Colchester Legion Stadium, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
