Truro boy to meet his favourite Sesame Street characters
Adam Davis has had a rough go for a four-year-old: brain cancer, stroke, chemotherapy, radiation and on-going doctor visits.
“He was an incredible patient,” said Adam’s father Peter. “He hardly ever complained, he had the doctors and nurses in awe.”
Thankfully, the Truro boy has rung two bells at the Isaac Walton Killam Children’s Hospital in Halifax – one for the end of five months of chemo, and one for the end of 30 days of radiation.
“He is tumour free,” said Peter. “He still goes for an MRI every three months and a whole team of health-care workers at the IWK are following him. So yeah, we are very grateful.”
Adam’s family got some more good news recently; the Children’s Wish Foundation has arranged for Adam and his family to meet Adam’s favourite Sesame Street characters on an island in Jamaica.
Adam says Elmo is his favourite character, and then says, maybe Big Bird.
The family will spend a week on the island.
“We’re really looking forward to just relaxing, just having some quality, family time,” said Adam’s mother Jane. “We haven’t had that since all this began.”
Peter says just knowing they were going to get a break helped them through the tough times.
“We’ve known about this for a little while and it has been a nice light at the end of the tunnel for us, something nice to look forward to while we were going through all of that,” says Peter.
“We’re so grateful to Children’s Wish for all they have done, to all the corporate and individual sponsors of Children’s Wish – and we just can’t say enough about the staff at the IWK; I don’t have the words.”
Children’s Wish Foundation and the staff at MacQuarries Pharmasave presented Adam with his travel package Wednesday. They celebrated with cake and balloons and lots of photos.
MacQuarries has been fundraising for Christmas Wish and earlier they also presented Adam with a collection of elephant toys and gifts.
Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada grants wishes to children between the ages of 3 and 17 who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. During its 30-year history, the foundation has granted wishes to more than 25,000 children. The Nova Scotia branch has made 1,100 wishes come true and is currently working on another 98 right now.
