Truro Boys & Girls Club building will soon be demolished with plans of using the site for parking space for the town’s civic square.

The Boys and Girls Club of Truro and Colchester will be moving into a new home in late June.

The club is leaving the building at 175 Victoria St. for space in the Douglas Street Recreation Centre, and the Victoria Street site will become a parking lot.

“We’ll be downsizing in space but we’ll have outdoor space, a larger gym and easy access to the park,” said Joanne McCallum, director. “Everything will be on one level, which is super good.”

Another bonus is a security system. The club had a television and game systems stolen in December.

The Boys and Girls Club had

been looking into funding to make the Victoria Street property more accessible and found that, because of the design of the old building, it would be

very expensive. During discussions with the town the idea of relocating to Douglas Street came up.

“We’re pretty excited and a little bit sad,” said McCallum. “What goes on here really impacts lives so we might hold an open house here for people to come in and share their memories before we leave.”

The same programs will be run out of the new location with office space constructed in one of the rooms.

To help with costs the club hold a few events, including Funny Fundraiser with Marc Sauve at the Marigold Cultural Centre March 9 at 8 p.m. Tickets are available through Ticketpro.

The Town of Truro owns the Victoria Street property the club is vacating and says the structure is past its useful life. Plans are to demolish it and create more parking for the civic square. A demolition date has not yet been set.
