Check out the March Break Mix-up.

That’s the advice Dianna rose Everett is offering to parents looking for something to do with their children over March break.

“It’s a day camp for the kids,” said Everett, a second-year student in the Child and Youth Care program at the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) Truro campus.

“We’d like to see some new faces,” she said. “We’re doing a mix-up camp this year, so every day is a different theme.”

The camp, running March 13-17, is open to students from grades 1 to 6, and is run by the college’s first- and second-year students from the program who coordinate games, arts and crafts and other fun activities.

There will also be a science day the five senses, Everett said.

The cost to register a child in the program is $25 for college-enrolled students and $50 for others. The proceeds are used to purchase supplies and materials for the activities along with snacks and water.

Parents can drop their children off at the campus at 8:30 a.m. and pick them up at 4:30 p.m. The children are required to bring their own lunches.

Students enrolled in the Child and Youth Care Program are taught about child and youth development, crisis de-escalation, counselling skills, legalities regarding abuse/neglect and about creating a space in which children can feel safe. Workshops in the program include Non Violent Crisis Intervention, Suicide Assist and Mental Health First Aid.

“We also learn how to plan appropriate activities for developmental ages and learn therapeutic dialogue skills as well,” Everett said.

During their course, the students go on two placements and a two-month internship to demonstrate what they learned.

“So a lot of our learning is very hands on as well,” she added.
