Bearcats rattle off two more wins

Secure in second, Truro waits to see who playoff opponent will be

Zach Moody’s goal, coming at 3:26 of overtime, capped a comeback from a three-goal deficit and earned the Truro Bearcats a 4-3 win Saturday night in Miramichi.

While the Maritime Junior Hockey League playoff picture is coming into focus, the second-place Bearcats still don’t know who they will face in the opening round.

The Amherst Ramblers have taken a run at the Yarmouth Mariners for third place in the competitiv­e Eastlink South division. Yarmouth dropped a 3-1 decision in Dieppe Sunday and lead the Ramblers by just three points, with two games remaining. Amherst has three games to play.

Which ever team secures third place will face the Bearcats, while the fourth-place team takes on first-place Pictou County Weeks Crushers.

Truro sits three points back of the Crushers. The teams square off Thursday in the Bearcats’ final game of the regular season.

Dylan Burton, Riley Baggs on the power play, and captain Kyle Tibbo with his leaguelead­ing 47th goal of the season, pulled Truro even and sent the game to overtime.

Moody was set up on the overtime winner by Connor Morrison and Baggs, who had three assists on the night.

Netminder Jason Rioux turned aside 26 shots for the win, while the Bearcats returned 27 shots at the Miramichi net.

It was strictly hockey as the teams were each assessed just two minor penalties.

Justin Doiron scored the only goal of the first on Friday night, with Dominik Lavergne beating Rioux midway through the second to tie it.

Jarrod Shipley, with a powerplay marker, and Burton with the eventual winning goal, made it 3-1 heading to the third.

After Brandon Coulumbe scored for the Tigers, Cameron MacLeod potted two goals to round out the 5-2 final.

Rioux faced 30 shots to take the win while his team mated fired 39 shots at the Campbellto­n net.

The Bearcats round out their regular season Thursday with a visit to New Glasgow, to square off against the first-place Crushers. Game time is 7 p.m.
