Crossfit workout in Bible Hill raises money for women’s shelter and attention for International Women’s Day
To mark the occasion a number of people showed up for a fitness workout and to help a local women’s shelter.
Nurses, paramedics, and correction officers worked out in their uniforms at a Bible Hill gym on International Women’s Day.
John Hunka, owner of Crossfit Bluenose, organized the special group workout on Wednesday to bring attention to the work and strength of women.
“It’s important to take some time on this day and recognize everything women do and show some appreciation for their contributions,” said Hunka. “We want to raise some awareness of this important day and help out a little, too.”
The two dozen participants at the workout were able to make donations or buy special purple t-shirts printed with the slogan ‘Be bold for change.’ The workout raised $500 which will be donated to a women’s shelter in Colchester County.
Athletes from Studio Fit in Truro and Rocky Lake Crossfit in Bedford also attended the workout.
The United Nations set the theme for this year’s International Women’s Day to be “Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50-50 by 2030.”
“International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities,” says the UN’s webpage.
