Students at the NSCC have been cooking up lots of food, but it’s not for them to eat.

Once they have things cooked the students in the Achieve program are delivering meals to the Truro Homeless Outreach Society shelter. They’re able to purchase supplies with $1,000 in funding from the NSCC Difference Dollars project.

“I think this is a really good way to help in the community,” said Luke Dillman, one of 10 students in the class. “You only have one community so you have to take care of it. I thought this would be a good way to make people smile.”

Dillman’s mother does work at the shelter and he has volunteered there in the past.

“I love being there and being able to talk to the people and hear their stories,” he said. “You hear some amazing stories. You never know what these people did.”

Dillman also enjoys cooking, so the program is an ideal fit for him.

Instructor Joy Larusic applied for the funding, which was designed to combine classroom learning with community service.

“It’s a great opportunity to make connections with the community and highlight student strengths,” she said. “The students in Achieve really shine in compassion and the understanding of being good citizens when given the opportunity. They’re great students and they like to help. This really helps them understand the concepts we teach.”

The Achieve program includes training in life skills, employment preparation, wellness, social media and networking.
