Truro woman thrilled to have Neila back home after car accident
A Truro woman who lost her dog after a motor vehicle accident in Pictou County is thrilled to be reunited with her pooch.
Ashley Fennell stood on the bank next to the Trans Canada Highway in Pictou County Thursday around noon and called desperately into the woods for her dog: “Neila!”
After a horrific 24 hours, the Truro woman wanted nothing more than to hold her pet.
Wednesday afternoon she had been behind the wheel at the same location when she hit gravel and lost control of her car and went crashing into the median.
While she managed to escape without serious injuries, her boyfriend fractured his neck, broke his nose and some ribs in the crash, she said. Pepper, one of the two dogs that was travelling with her, broke its spine.
“They said her spine was completely broken. I asked ‘How much money will it take to fix
it.’”
They said: “We can’t fix it. It doesn’t matter how much
money.”
So Fennell went home that night with one dog in a box and cried thinking about Neila, Pepper’s son who was thrown from the vehicle, lost and scared.
George Murray was driving through the area Thursday morning when he spotted the dog. He pulled over and tried to help find it for the next six hours. Soon, others joined to help.
Fennell showed up as soon as she could get a ride and put out food in hopes that Neila might show up.
After hollering for a while she went to the car and was about to have a cigarette when she spotted him, running towards the highway. Unaware that she was there, Neila was headed towards the highway. Fennell said she was terrified that he might get hit.
“I yelled at him and he ran up the hill again,” she said. “As soon as he realized it was me he came running over.”
She said she couldn’t be happier to have him back.
As bad a day as she had before, she said she was relieved to have the dog back.
“I couldn’t be happier,” she said.
