Talk, walk with doc takes on nutrition component

- By lynn Curwin

Now you can do more than walk with a doc Saturday mornings; you can also eat with a doc.

The Walk With a Doc program started up in October, with health professionals providing short talks before walking with people at the RECC.

“We try to make it a fun, social event,” said Raj Makkar, one of the organizers. “Our tag line is ‘Bring a friend’ and it’s not anything competitive. Some people walk for five minutes and some walk the whole hour.”

Through a partnership with Atlantic Superstore a food component is also included once a month. A chef and dietitian join the group downstairs after the walk to prepare a meal for participants. There is discussion about nutrition while the food is prepared.

“We’ve had a really good response and average about 50 people each week,” said Raj Makkar, one of the organizers.

“We’ve got good momentum going and we’d like to keep it that way so we’re hoping more people will join us.”

There are usually three to five physicians walking Saturday mornings, with 12 showing up one week. Nurses, dietitians and physiotherapists have also taken part. One of the health workers provides a short presentation before walkers head

onto the track, and they also chat with people as they exercise on the indoor track.

There are plans to hold some of the walks on sections of the Cobequid Trail during the summer.

Walk with a Doc runs from 8:30-9:30 at the RECC walking track every Saturday unless there is conflict with a scheduled event.
