Former jail property project to proceed

Construction of a residential complex on the site of the former Truro jail is expected to start later this year, developer Darren Rodgers says.

“I’m working on the plans right now,” he told the Truro Daily News this week. “I’d like to see work start this summer.”

Rodgers was contacted for comment following some local speculation that the residential development was not proceeding and that the former jail property on Queen Street was being sold.

Town planner Jason Fox said he had also heard a rumour that the property was for sale and CAO Mike Dolter said town officials had planned to seek more information this week.

But Rodgers said while he had been approached by another developer inquiring whether he would be interested in selling the property, he has not received any offer and the site has not been listed with a realtor.

Rodgers, of Nine Mile River, has a development agreement with the Town of Truro to construct a mixed-use development of the former Colchester County jail property and surrounding land.

The proposal includes demolishing two dwellings at 209 and 211 Queen St. (both owned by Rodgers) as well as renovating and expanding the former jail, developing a 35-unit four-storey residential building, and developing a second, four-storey, mixed-use building containing 30 dwelling units plus commercial space.

Other highlights in the proposal include a community garden and street-level retail units.

Fox said under the agreement with the town Rodgers is supposed to apply for business permits by May. But if Rodgers is planning to continue with his original plans, Fox said it should not pose an issue if Rodgers requested an extension.

“I don’t think I would have any problem with making a recommendation (to council) to request an extension,” he said.
