Truro’s Pride Parade not losing focus: McNutt
Al McNutt would like to reassure people that the focus on things LGBTQ-related will not be lost during this year’s week of Pride and Diversity.
Some people have expressed concerns that efforts to be inclusive would change the tone of the celebration.
“We’re not going to lose sight of things
LGBTQ; this is a continuation of last year’s
Pride Parade,” said McNutt, supervisor at the Northern Healthy Connections Society (NHCS), which is organizing the event. “We have to have a sense of inclusion and co-operation with others, not only LGBTQ
groups but groups who might have these people access their services. We need to be welcoming and supportive of everyone.
“Being an openly gay man for so many years I know what discrimination is. I know what it’s like to be excluded. We need to
be welcoming.”
He feels it’s important to be culturally diverse, as LGBTQ people are present in every culture.
Businesses and organizations are encouraged to hold special events throughout the week, which begins July 24 with the raising of the rainbow flag, and concludes on parade day, July 29. The NHCS will include a list of connected events on their Facebook page.
“This is a very important event and we’re forging ahead with planning,” said McNutt. “There are a few things being planned, including a drag show.”
This year floats will be permitted in the parade, which will begin at the Colchester Legion Stadium parking lot and end at the Truro Civic Square, where there will be entertainment, food and displays. Registration forms for parade entries are available through the NHCS.
