Supertramp music the finale of Spring Fling Thing

A Spring Fling Thing will feature talents of the Nova New Horizons Band program’s various levels.

The event is Wednesday, May 17 at the Best Western Glengarry at 7:30 p.m. Admission price is $15 per person and includes hot and cold buffet food items along with a spring punch. This marks the Truro-based end of term concert.

A Spring Fling Thing will be staged at the Best Western Glengarry Hotel starting at 7:30 p.m. and will feature the newly minted Beginner Band along with the Level 1 through 4 Bands and the Cobequid New Horizons Jazz Band.

Nova New Horizons Band program founder and conductor Paul Barrett will lead the five concert bands through a variety of popular and traditiona­l instrument­al music. Truro Junior High School music teacher, arranger and musician Nick Fisher will front the Cobequid New Horizons Jazz Band.

The Level 4 Band will open the program with a spirited Spanish flavoured compositio­n by Steve Hodges titled “Fiero,” followed by “Black Wolf Run” – written by John Higgins.

The newly minted Beginner Band will offer the well know Calpyso song “Mary Ann” and will swing with “New Horizons Band Blues”. Level 1 is the next step up the experience ladder as they perform a beautiful ballad by Michael Sweeney simply titled “Daydreams.”

Level 2 continues the show with a rhythmical­ly infectious piece called “Afican Festival” followed by “Dansbury Run” and “Windbreak Overture.”

Level 3 borrows from the body of work by ABBA composers Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus to present “I Have A Dream” which will feature band member Larry Alexander on mandolin. Following that is well-known songs “Hello Dolly”, “Bye, Bye Blackbird” and “Heart of My Heart.”

The Cobequid New Horizons Jazz Band will perform three original compositio­ns by Dean Sorensson. “Summer Heat”, “River City Blues” and “Mutual Deception” are all jazz band tunes that Nick Fisher will take the band through.

The Level 4 Band will end the program with “Celtic Ritual” complete with an Irish drum or bodhran. The grand finale will be a medley of four of the best known and loved Supertramp songs: “Take The Long Way Home,” “Breakfast In America,” “Goodbye Stranger” and “The Logical Song.”
