Mother’s Day

In lieu of the traditional Mother Of The Year presentation, Truro Raceway has decided to honour the late Audrey McManus who passed away last week.

Audrey, a mother of seven, was well known at the raceway/ exhibition grounds, having been employed in various capacities during the annual Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition over the years and as well as operator of the raceway paddock canteen with her husband, Pat.

Audrey was not only an avid harness racing enthusiast but enjoyed the pleasure of being a standardbred owner along with members of her family in past years.

Chase the Ace

The race day 50-50 draw has a new face at Truro Raceway, now being sold as the popular Chase The Ace contest.

Last week’s lucky winner was Hugh MacKay, picking up $88 in prize winnings.

MacKay drew the 10 of clubs, leaving the Ace of spades in the deck and the pot with a $332 carryover for May 14.

Ask a trainer

This week’s question for a trainer went out to Truro’s Phil Pinkney – an O’Brien Award Winner, owner, trainer and driver.

Q: An equipment change race fans often hear announced is “addition of a Murphy Blind inside.” We asked Phil, What is a Murphy Blind and What is its purpose?

Phil explained that a Murphy Blind, which is a square piece of leather approximately six inches square, is an extremely useful tool to correct a horse that may be bearing in or out on the rein.

Example – if a horse is bearing out on the left rein the Murphy Blind would be attached to right side of the bridle over the eye to correct this action by encouraging the horse to keep his head straight and hopefully improve his performance.
