- By Jonathan Riley

Ryan Mackenzie has had a solid year at the table –racking up points as well as balls – and has earned the title of Top Standard Player.

A Truro pool player has won the title of Top Standard Player on the Atlantic 9-Ball tour.

Ryan Mackenzie finished the 2016-17 tour with 32 points from eight tournaments, good for top spot among the 75 Standard or C class players.

“It feels good,” said Mackenzie.

“It was a lot of hard work and practice. There were a lot of people gunning for me after the first tournament. I didn’t want to lose my early lead.”

The tour was made up of monthly tournaments starting last September and wrapping up this April.

At the first tournament Mackenzie earned seven points for finishing ninth out of the 12 players but first out of all the standard players.

After that, he earned a steady three and four points a tournament the rest of the year.

He finished 33rd out of 182 players in all the divisions. Next year, because of his success this year, he’ll be playing in the B or Open Class.

The Atlantic 9-Ball tour is wrapping up this weekend with their Grand Finale event at Almon Billiards in Halifax with $15,000 in prizes on offer.

Mackenzie says he is hoping to finish in the top 10 at that event. First place in the C class stands to win $300, second place $200 and first place $100.

Mackenzie added he’s appreciative of the support he’s received from sponsors Medi Shoppe on Prince Street and the Robie Street Tim Hortons.
