Human trafficking the subject of presentations at Truro library
A rug with a message will visit Truro this week before heading to other areas of the province.
e ‘Out of the Shadows’ rug will be on display at the Truro library ursday, the same day the library hosts a documentary on human tra cking.
People are invited to drop by to watch the lm, chat and add to the rug.
“The face of human trafcking has changed,” said Lia Renaud, a human rights advocate who has worked with survivors of torture, domestic violence and human trafficking. “A lot of young people are recruited online.
“I feel one of the most important issues isn’t being addressed; we need more conversation around dealing with people who creating the demand by buying.”
The documentary includes a police officer, who talks about taking down trafficking rings, a former trafficker telling how he lured young girls into the sex trade, a parent whose daughter was tra cked, and a survivor of human tra cking telling her own story. It will be shown at 2 p.m. in the J Harris Read Room. Following the lm, an Ontario woman, who was tra cked, will join in conversation through Skype.
e rug, which was designed by survivors, will be on display in the Ina M Patterson Study, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and people are invited to drop by and add some loops.

is week is Victims and Survivors of Crime Week. It is designed to raise awareness about the issues facing victims and survivors and the services and laws in place to help them and their families, as well as acknowledge the work of service providers.
