Truro Raceway will host a series of harness races on Friday nights during the summer months.
Fast Fridays are coming to Truro Raceway this summer.
The harness racing track in Bible Hill has announced race dates for four Fridays in June, July and August.
“We thought it would be kind of fun to try some Friday night racing in the summertime,” said raceway general manager Joe Nicholson. “We’re going to call them Fast Fridays.”
Nicholson, who took over as GM of the track last August, said feedback indicates many people in the local harness racing community are supportive of the idea.
“We’re just hoping it will be fun and it will lead up to Grand Circuit Week in July, so we thought we’d give it a go.
“For now, the idea is we will have it as a nice Friday night event that anybody can come to. Whether they come to Sunday’s or are new to racing, we will have something for everybody.”
Atlantic Grand Circuit Week is the biggest week of harness racing in Nova Scotia. It will be held at Truro Raceway July 16 to 23.
The live harness racing season returned to Truro Raceway on May 7.
Nicholson said the wager has consistently increased during the past three years at the
track, thanks in large part to electronic wagering from other parts of the world.
In 2016, for example, he said of all the money wagered at Truro Raceway, 15 per cent of it came from the U.S., while 12 per cent of it came from Europe.
“Truro Raceway is an exporter; we’re bringing money into Colchester County from the U.S. and Europe that’s going towards jobs here and services here.“
Live racing will be held at Truro Raceway on Sunday. Post-time is 1 p.m.
