Marmac kickboxers making amateur debuts Saturday in Lantz
A group of kickboxers from Marmac Athletics will make their fight debuts this weekend on a card at the East Hants Sportsplex in Lantz.
Four kickboxers from Marmac Athletics will make their amateur fight debuts Saturday at the East Hants Sportsplex in Lantz.
Jessica Woodworth, Nick Redmond, Kaleb Sylliboy and Taylor McCafferty will fight on the Rising Tides card, hosted by the Nova Kickboxing promotion.
“It’s all their first-time fights,” said coach Micky Marshall. “None of them have fought before so they’re all rookies to the sport and they’ve all been wanting to compete for awhile, and there hasn’t been much around for competitions as of late so this is the first one that came around here, so they’re going to give it a try.”
Marshall said the amateur striking scene isn’t as vibrant as it once was, adding most fight cards are hosted out of province. For that reason, Saturday’s event presents a great opportunity for Truro fighters to get their feet wet on the local circuit, he said.
The fight card is a Muay Thai event, which is closely related to kickboxing. The difference is in clinching and striking rules.
And while his kickboxers aren’t experienced in Muay Thai, Marshall doesn’t expect it will be a factor in their fights.
“I have confidence in them all
that they can handle themselves and that they won’t get played into that game,” said Marshall, himself a former competitive
amateur kickboxer for more than a decade.
“It’s a winnable fight – you just have to fight your strategy and your style, that’s for sure.
“Both people have a game plan, both people have a strategy. It’s who can put their strategy into effect and keep it going and win the fight that way.”
Saturday’s card features 11 fights and gets underway at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance and $35 at the door.
