Suicide squeeze

With loss to Halifax Pelham Canadians in NSSBL action

-

The Truro Bearcats continue to struggle in the early stages of the 2017 Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League season.

After a trouncing Thursday in Dartmouth, the Bearcats returned to the friendly confines of the TAAC grounds Friday but didn’t fare much better, dropping an 11-4 decision to the visiting Halifax Pelham Molson Canadians.

The loss leaves Truro winless with a record of six straight losses. Sydney Sooners and the Canadians share top spot in the five-team loop with 3-0 records; Dartmouth Moosehead Dry are 3-1 and Kentville Wildcats are 1-3.

Halifax got to the Bearcats early, building up a lead of 6-0 by the end of the second. The Canadians out-hit Truro 15-7 in the contest.

The Bearcats did what they could to make something happen, even attempting a bases loaded suicide squeeze but the bunt didn’t roll far enough to get the job done and Dan Bates was out, after a collision at the plate with Halifax catcher Greg MacKinnon.

For the Bearcats, Adam Lombard had a pair of singles, while Justin Morton had a single and drove in a run and John Chapman and Ryan Bates each had a single.

Aaron Ferguson led Halifax at the plate with a double, a pair of singles and an RBI. Jake Pelham had a pair of doubles and cashed in four runs.

Southpaw Jamie MacLean started on the mound for Truro and took the loss, while Brandon MacKinnon recorded the win for Halifax, working to the seventh inning.

The Bearcats have a rematch with Halifax Tuesday, at Mainland Common, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Friday, Truro gets their first look at Kentville as they entertain the Wildcats for a 7:30 p.m. contest at the TAAC Grounds.
