Truro students stir up excitement over musical

- BY LYNN CURWIN

People at the Truro Farmers’ Market Saturday morning were treated to a sneak preview of the CEC student musical, Rock of Ages, which is being staged at the end of the week.

Students took part in a flash mob in the outdoor section of the market, singing and dancing and sharing their enthusiasm.

Earlier this year they thought work-to-rule had ended their chances of taking part in a show. Then they started talking.

“When we first made the group chat we were like, ‘Hey! Why don’t we do our own musical?’ And then it’s like ‘Yeah! That’s such a great idea.’” said Emma Landry.

When they contacted Lenore Zann and asked her to produce the musical they were unaware of how much was involved.

“We started out as small little group, in Lenore’s living room, with a dream,” said Abigail Kiley. “It felt like it was a bit of a pipe dream, like it wasn’t actually going to go on, and now it’s a reality.”

Eamon McCarron, a Grade 12 student and musical director for the show, said there was a lot of skepticism at first but that

has vanished. Many individuals and businesses have stepped forward to help, and the county provided some funding.

The show is being directed by Chloee Trites, a 17-year-old Grade 11 student

“I was really scared at first,” she said. “I’ve stage managed a lot, and been assistant director, but directing and knowing it was on me to help put on the show and get everything organized was a little stressful, but it’s looking really good and the actors are extremely talented and committed.

“It’s a really big dream of all of ours that we actually got to do this.”

The students have been rehearsing for two or three hours every evening recently and they were excited to share a bit of the show with people on Saturday. They move into the Alumni Theatre, at Dal AC, for rehearsals Monday evening.

The show will be staged in the theatre June 9, 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m., with an extra Saturday performance at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at MacQuarrie’s Pharmasave on the Esplanade.
