Bikes for Kids

United Way of Colchester and Big Brothers Big Sisters partner for Bikes for Kids

-

United Way of Colchester, Big Brothers Big Sisters gearing up for 18th annual event for area children and youth.

Bikes and young people will be matched again this summer, when the United Way of Colchester County’s Bikes for Kids program takes place.

This year, the Big Brothers Big Sisters Association of Colchester is the lead sponsor for the program, which is in its 18th year.

“Bikes for Kids has a significant impact on Colchester families,” said Terry Hearn, executive director of the United Way of Colchester County. “Kids get more physical activity and spend time outdoors with friends, and teenagers have a means of transportation, which may help them get to work.”

Through the program, gently used bikes are collected through community donations, tuned up by volunteers and then given to children and youth (ages 2-18).

United Way program coordinator Declan Watson will consider each child’s size and needs to match them with a bicycle. Each child will also receive a new helmet, lock and safety booklet.

Michelle Misener, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters, said both agencies involved have a common goal to ensure all youth have the equipment necessary to live a safe

and healthy lifestyle.

The deadline to apply for a bike is Friday, June 30. Applications are available by contacting the United Way at 902 895-9313,

uwcolchester@gmail.com or by visiting www.colchester.unitedway.ca. Approval of a parent or guardian is required when requesting a bike and the child

must be present when the bike is given out.

To volunteer, donate a bike, or receive a bike contact the United Way at 902-895-9313.
