High-level coaches to instruct
One of the most popular and successful volleyball camps in eastern Canada will take place this summer in Truro.
One of the largest and most successful volleyball camps in eastern Canada returns to Truro in August.
The 21st annual CEC Volleyball Camp will run from Aug. 28 to 31 and is open to both girls and boys in grades three to nine from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
Instruction will focus on basic fundamental skills, positional play, and offensive and defensive systems. Campers are divided into five separate groups based on age and skill level.
Registration forms are available from Bob Piers at 78 Park St., in Truro (897-1997). The registration fee for the camp is $100, with a family rate of $140 for two campers and $170 for three. The registration deadline is July 31.
The head coaches are Piers, Paul Settle, Harvey MacEachern, Hilary Cormier, Carrie Peck and Jolayne MacKenzie.
Piers, the former athletic director at CEC and a physical education teacher for 29 years, has been involved in coaching high
school volleyball since 1966. He is the current coach of the CEC varsity girls team.
Settle has been involved in coaching and refereeing volleyball in this region for more than 30 years. He is the current head
coach at Mount Allison University.
Settle has been a major force in the development of girls club volleyball in the Truro area and is one of the co-founders of the Cougar Volleyball Camp.
MacEachern has been the head coach for the CEC varsity boys volleyball program at CEC for the past 27 years. His high school team won the NSSAF Division 1 the past two years. He is the founder of the Truro Tide boys club program.
Cormier and Peck have led the CEC #2 girls team to the NSSAF Division 2 title two out of the last four years. They also coached the under-16 and under-17 Truro Cougars last winter, capturing the VNS championships in both divisions.
Peck will also coach the Nova Scotia Canada Games Team in Winnipeg this summer.
Before moving to the Truro area, Cormier excelled in both volleyball and basketball at Sussex High School and played varsity girls volleyball at CBU.
MacKenzie has coached boys and girls volleyball in the Truro area for several years. She led the under-14 Truro Cougars to a provincial title in 2015. Her Bible Hill junior high team has captured the regional championship two out of the last three years.
