Bearcats blanked in outings against Sooners

The Truro Bearcats failed to plate a run on the weekend as they travelled to Sydney for a pair of Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League games against the Sooners.

Friday, the Bearcats were defeated 10-0 in the Sooners’ home opener and Saturday they were blanked 3-0, despite out-hitting the Sooners 6-5.

Dartmouth Moosehead Dry and the Sooners sit atop the fiveteam league standings with six wins and one loss each. Halifax Pelham Molson Canadians (5-2) hold down third while Kentville Wildcats (2-5) are fourth and the Bearcats are winless in their first 10 outings.

Friday, three hits was all the offence Truro could muster while the Sooners touched up Bearcats’ pitching for 13 hits.

Devin Mahoney posted the win on the mound for Sydney while Jason Smith was saddled with the loss.

John Chapman had a double for the Bearcats and Darson Murphy added a single. Chris Farrow led the attack for the Sooners with a double and two singles. He also drove in two runs, swiped two bases and scored twice. Sean Ferguson had three singles and two RBIs.

Saturday, the Sooners struck for two runs in their half of the first inning and held Truro at bay from there, adding another run in the fifth for the 3-0 final.

Starter Jordan Johnson took the loss on the mound for Truro and Logan Aker recorded the win for Sydney.

Justin Morton had two singles for the Bearcats, while Murphy, Jeff Chisholm, Dan Bates and Adam Lombard all had a single each.

Mahoney blasted a two-run homer for the Sooners and also added a double.

The coming week for the Bearcats brings a home-and-home encounter with the Canadians. Tuesday, Truro travels to Halifax for a 7:30 p.m. start at Mainland Common and Friday, the teams are in Truro for a 7:30 p.m. matchup at the TAAC Grounds.
