One dead, two injured in crash
One man is dead and two are injured following a singlevehicle accident on the Bog Road in Mount Denson Thursday morning.
Hantsport Deputy Fire Chief Paul Maynard said firefighters were alerted to a rollover with entrapment at 1:03 a.m. on June 22.
Upon arrival, Maynard said they saw a four-door passenger sedan on its side blocking the bridge that connects Hantsport and Falmouth.
“There was a fire in the engine compartment under the vehicle,” said Maynard. “An RCMP officer with a fire extinguisher on the other side was able to contain the fire to the engine compartment.”
Maynard said the Windsor Fire Department was called in for mutual aid to assist on the other side of the bridge due to the limited access.
“All the patients were either ejected or self-extricated from the vehicle,” said Maynard, noting firefighters helped assess the people involved in the crash.
Cpl. Dal Hutchinson confirmed that the car accident involved four occupants.
“As a result of the collision, a 22-year-old man who was a passenger in the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene,” he said in a prepared statement.
“Two female passengers – a 16-year-old and a 20-year-old – were transported to Valley Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.”
The driver of the vehicle, a 25-year-old Hants County man, is reported to have fled the scene prior to RCMP arrival. He was later arrested without incident around 9 a.m. Charges are pending in relation to this collision.
Several organizations were involved with the accident scene, including the Windsor District RCMP, RCMP Police Dog Services, an RCMP collision analyst, paramedics, firefighters from Windsor and Hantsport, and representatives with Nova Scotia Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal.
Maynard said counselling will be available to the firefighters who attended the fatality.
The RCMP investigation into the matter is ongoing and TIR will be assessing the bridge.
