Warren wins gold, silver in the pool
Centurions achieve success at provincial junior festival
Karina Warren of the Truro Centruions captured a gold medal in the 1,500m freestyle event and was a member of the silver medal-winning 4x100m freestyle team at the Nova Scotia junior swim festival in Shearwater.
Warren, competing in the 12 and under age category, was also fourth in the 50m breast and sixth in the 50m free and 200m breast.
Warren won silver in the relay with teammates Julia HuttSemple, Maureen O’Connor and Emma Cook.
The festival served as provincials for age group swimmers with junior qualifying times. The three-day meet featured preliminary swims each morning and finals in the evening.
Each swimmer took part in six individual races and the team also competed in relay events.
Also in the girls 12 and under group, Hutt-Semple won silver in the 200m fly, while O’Connor won bronze in the 200m free and finished fourth in the 50m free. Cook won bronze in the 1,500m free.
In the girls 13-14 age category, Emily O’Connor won silver in the 100m free, silver in the 100m breast and bronze in the 400m free, while Taylor Newman won bronze in the 50m free and 200m free. Amielia McLeod was a silver-medalist in the 800m free.
In the girls 15 and over, Olivya Reyes won silver in the 100m
back and bronze in the 200m back.
In the boys 13-14 category, Zander Smith nabbed gold in the 50m fly and bronze in the 50m free.
The 13-14 girls relay team of McLeod, Emily O’Connor, Newman and Hutt-Semple captured bronze for Truro in the 4x50m IM. Hutt-Semple swam as an under-ager in the event because
the team did not have a fourth swimmer competing in the 13-14 girls age category.
The final meet for the Centurions for this swim season will be July 6 to 9. The Truro swimmers with senior qualifying times will be competing in the Ken Dunn provincials championships in Halifax The meet will feature the top swimmers from eastern Canada.
