South Colchester Academy students Marika Schenkels and Luke Fisher were honoured with the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal.

Marika Schenkels and Luke Fisher were this year’s Lieutenant Governor Medal winners at South Colchester Academy.

Marika has been involved with South Colchester Academy’s volleyball program since she was in Grade 8 as both a player and a coach. She is also involved with SCA’s media team and began a women’s rights group at the school. She has competed provincial­ly and nationally with her volleyball team, won a bronze medal at the Canada Wide Science Fair in Montreal and recently won a gold medal in video production, which qualified her and her partner to compete at the Skills Canada National Competitio­n in Winnipeg. She is president of the Shu-Mil 4-H club and represente­d her province at the 2017 4-H National Citizenshi­p Congress.

She is a youth member on her local community health board and sits on the Because I Am a Girl speaker’s bureau. She works part-time as a lifeguard and swimming instructor.

Marika is one of 40 Canadians selected to receive a $33,000/ year scholarshi­p to attend United World Colleges. UWC is an internatio­nal movement that aims to make education a force to unite people for peace and a sustainabl­e future. She was selected to complete high school at Pearson College on Vancouver Island, and will be studying the IB curriculum alongside 160 other students from many countries.

She plans to pursue a career in the medical field.

Luke Fisher

Luke has excelled in science and math and really enjoys physics. He has also been involved in activities and sports after school. He has been the captain of the senior boys volleyball and junior boys basketball teams and has participat­ed in junior boys golf and is playing senior boys softball this year. He has won athlete of the month many times.

Luke volunteers at the Upper Stewiacke Fire Department and has participat­ed in 4-H (in beef, small engines, tractors, judging, public speaking, tug of war and tractor driving contests) for several years. He is also very involved with the Middle Stewiacke United Church. He works on his family’s farm and is one of the youngest participan­ts to take part in provincial, national and internatio­nal agricultur­al conference­s.
