Hartlen named first recipient of Charlie A’Court Scholarship
A CEC graduating student and trumpet player has been named the first recipient of the Charlie A’Court Scholarship for Excellence in Music (CASEM).
Noah Hartlen, who is graduating with top honours in music and sat as president of the CEC Band executive during his entire high school years, received his award from A’Court during Thursday night’s graduation ceremonies.
“Noah displays a high calibre of musicianship for his age and his academic discipline has earned him a spot in the Bachelor of Music program at Acadia University,” A’Court said, in a news release.
A’Court, a McCallum Settlement native and international recording and touring artist, chose a CEC student as the recipient of the inaugural award to mark the 20th anniversary of his graduation from the Truro high School.
In subsequent years, the $500 annual scholarship will be expanded to include music students from other schools across the province.
A’Court said he was “thoroughly taken” by the level of musical prowess and academic skill of all the applicants for the scholarship’s first year. And while all were impressive, Hartlen’s talent and dedication to his craft moved him to the top of the list.
“It takes conviction and devotion to balance out the responsibilities of these students on and off the stage and I was seriously impressed by this group of students,” A’Court said. “Though only one recipient can be selected, all the applicants can be truly proud of their success to this point.”
Outside the many band projects Hartlen was involved in, the Truro-native also performed as lead trumpeter in the Nova Scotia Youth Wind Ensemble and Nova Scotia Honour Jazz. He also plays principle trumpet in the prestigious Denis Wick Canadian Wind Orchestra, one of the premier honour band programs in Canada.
