No wrongdoing in case of boy who fell from Cape Breton cliff

-

The provincial police watchdog has determined there was no wrongdoing in the death of 15-year-old Kobe Pink.

Pink died after falling down a cliff along the shores near Peck Street in Sydney Mines. The SIRT say he was running from police at the time.

The boy was reported missing on Dec. 28, 2016 and his body was found on the ocean shore near Peck Street in Sydney Mines on Jan. 1, 2017.

At the time, Pink’s older brother, George Pink, posted on Facebook that his “heart and soul” are crushed.

On Dec. 28, the Cape Breton Regional Police were called to a party on Peck Street shortly after 9:30 p.m. after a complaint of bear spray use by a male inside the home. The SIRT say Pink was hit by some of the bear spray, and he and his friends left the home at the time.

As the boys stood in the yard the police drove down the street and the boys ran off. Three ran and hid in trees behind the house, while Pink ran toward neighbouring houses.

When police saw Pink run off, they chased him believing he may be the suspect with the bear spray. Officers were unable to find him and returned to the home shortly after.

The SIRT say Pink was not familiar with the area and fell from a cliff into the water and drowned. The medical examiner showed the boy’s death was caused by drowning and he had no other injuries.

In these circumstances, the SIRT says there are no grounds to consider any charges against the police officers.
