Baker’s grand slam lifts Elks over Charros

Connor Baker drilled a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Brookfield Elks downed the Atlantic Heating Charros 8-3 in recent Shooters Bar and Grill Fastpitch League action.

The win allowed the Elks to earn a split of a doublehead­er after the Charros won the opening game 6-2.

Baker collected five RBI for the Elks in the nightcap, while Connor Hilton also homered and James Rutherford tripled. Bobby Sill added a pair of hits, including a double. For the Charros, Shane Gillis stroked two hits and drove in a run, while Randy Frame and Jake Hopewell doubled.

Winning pitcher Cody Anthony allowed six hits and struck out five. Losing pitcher Travis Nevin gave up seven hits and fanned 10.

In Game 1, Frame scattered nine hits and struck out 10 to pick up the W.

Nevin hit a two-run homer and Dave Gilby went 2-for-2 with an RBI and scored two runs. Hilton went 3-for-4 for the Elks and belted a solo homer in the fourth inning and Mike Wood doubled.

Anthony gave up seven hits in the loss.

In other action, the Scotia Canada Games Nova team Standings dropped both ends of a doublehead­er to the Halifax Pepperjack­s – falling 6-2 and 7-0.

Noah Hawes and Rowan Sears tripled for the Canada Games squad in the opener. In Game 2, the blue and white managed just two hits in the contest that was called after six innings due to the seven-run mercy rule.

Meanwhile, the under-18 Colchester Royals picked up their first win of the season, as they defeated the White Rock Rockies 13-6 in Game 2 of their twinbill.

The Rockies won the opening game 4-1.

Shooters Bar and Grill Fastpitch League action continues with doublehead­ers on Thursday.

The Royals and Elks meet at Elk Park, while the Charros and Canada Games team hook up in Lantz, and the Rockies and Pepperjack­s take the diamond in St. Croix, Hants County.
