Change is good

New Boys & Girls Club home has plenty to offer

There’s a big change in scenery at the Boys & Girls Club, with a move from their longtime Victoria Street location to the Douglas Street Recreation Centre.

The Boys & Girls Club of Truro and Colchester began running programs at the centre on July 4 and both adults and children are enjoying some of the advantages of the site.

“We’ve got a much larger gym now, which is nice,” said Joanne McCallum, director of the club. “We can also go outside for activities every day, and go right up to the park, and we have everything on one level.”

She said a one-level facility not only allows them to offer programs to more children, but makes it easier to keep an eye on things.

The club has an office, a tech room and two activity rooms, as well as use of the gym. Because the rooms were once classrooms they already had shelving and cupboard space for books, games and other items. They also have lots of windows, making the space bright. The rooms they’re using are located toward the back of the building and had mainly been storage space before they arrived. (People are asked to use the back entrance when picking up and dropping off children.)

“We’re still settling in,” said McCallum. “We got grants to help with the move and the equipment, and the town is setting up the computers for us.”

One item they would still like to have is a Lego table, and if anyone has one they’re no longer using they could certainly put it to use. Extra Lego would also be welcome.

McCallum plans to hold a grand opening at the club some time in the fall so everyone can see the new space after renovations and settling in are complete.

There are still some spaces available for summer camps.
