True colours flying high in Truro

The sun and the smiles were out when the rainbow flag was raised in front of Truro Town Hall Monday.

Several people gathered as Al McNutt, supervisor at the Northern Healthy Connections Society, which took the lead in organizing Pride events, and Truro DeputyMayor Cheryl Fritz raised the flag for the second year.

“This is a huge symbolic tradition that hopefully is going to be kept alive for many years,” said McNutt “I’m totally blown away with the number of businesses that have decorated, with the number of rainbow flags around town and the creative images. It’s not as simple as hanging a flag. People are being very creative.”

He feels what is taking place in Truro sends a clear message to other communities around the world.

“They’re following this now and saying, ‘ Wow! What a shift. What a turnaround to see such a celebration of Pride and to see the community come together.’”

A committee with representatives from many local groups helped put things together this year and McNutt is thrilled to have so many people involved.

There are about 45 entries in the parade, which begins at the stadium parking lot this year, and many activities are being held at the Civic Square following the parade.

Fritz said the town is pleased to kick off things off with the flag raising for the second year and feels Pride is an event where positive recognition can be directed throughout the community.

“It celebrates all diverse groups and being accepting of who everybody is and taking pride in who you are; we’re glad to be part of that,” she said.
