Nova Scotia’s golden girl

Queens County’s Sarah Mitton wins gold at Canada Games

-

When Sarah Mitton stood on the podium at the Canada Games Thursday, she thought about how far she’d come and the people who have helped her get to this point in her athletic career.

The Brooklyn, Queens County, athlete won a gold medal in women’s shot put at the Canada Games, taking place in Winnipeg.

“Winning gold at my first and only Canada Games is an incredible feeling as it’s my last chance to wear the provincial, team NS, singlet,” said Mitton in an email interview.

Mitton says she shares that medal with all the people who have supported her throughout the years, such as her parents and family, coaches, and all her friends.

The longtime athlete says she’s been throwing for a while, but recently she moved to Toronto to train at the East High Performance Centre with Richard Parkinson, a coach who specializes in the throwing events.

“Since I made that transition, I’ve had so much success and hope to continue that,” said Mitton.

Most Canada Games athletes are staying on campus at the University of Manitoba.

“It’s awesome,” said Mitton. “You get a chance to meet athletes from all sports, from all across Canada.”

When the games wrap up, Mitton will have a quick visit home, and then she will head to Taiwan for the World University Games with Team Canada, which are scheduled to take place from Aug. 19 to 30 in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan.
