Nova Scotia rakes in medals on the water

Team N.S. earned 11 more medals to stand fifth overall

Nova Scotia showed its strength on the water at the Canada Games in Winnipeg after taking home seven medals in watersport­s Monday.

Team N.S. took home three gold, four silvers and four bronzes over the long weekend, adding to the other 11 medals they won earlier last week.

Monday saw Nova Scotia show dominance in the water, with Connor Fitzpatric­k of Dartmouth taking home a gold in the men’s canoe/kayak C-1 500m race, and Ashley Card of Hammonds Plains winning the gold for the women’s canoe/kayak K-1 500m race.

The men’s canoe/kayak team also earned a gold medal Monday after winning in the K-2 1000m finals.

Zane Clarke took home silver in the men’s canoe/kayak K-1 500m final, and the women’s team also earned silver, finishing second in the canoe/kayak K-2 1000m final.

Nicole Jessup of Halifax finished third in the women’s canoe/kayak C-1 500m final and the men’s canoe/kayak C-2 team took third in the men’s C-2 1000m final, both earning a bronze for Nova Scotia.

Back on land, Ben Brown of Cambridge took home another medal Friday, winning silver in the men’s 200m para-wheelchair event.

The men’s beach volleyball team also took swilver after a close final game against British Columbia, losing 2-1.

Also on Friday, Donald Peters of Dartmouth earned another bronze in the Special Olympics men’s 200m dash and Casey Perrin of Oxford took home a bronze for the women’s para shot put finals.

The women’s softball team got off to a bumpy start this week, with losses to P.E.I. 13-1 and Alberta 8-1 on Monday.

The men’s indoor volleyball team also had a rough start, losing their first match against Saskatchew­an 3-0, but were able to turn it around Tuesday by beating P.E.I 3-0.

The women’s indoor volleyball team won their first Canada Games match against Saskatchew­an 3-0 Monday, but took a loss later in the day against Manitoba 3-1.
