the weekend.

“I thought I played very well,” he said. “In the first game I had four or five tackles and a fumble recovery and in the gold medal game I had a sack.”

After defeating New Brunswick in the semifinal game, Nova Scotia got three touchdowns from Malcom Bussey in the win over an Ontario squad that kept things closer after falling behind early.

The win had added meaning , since it came on home turf at Acadia University’s field in Wolfville.

The 13-year-old Port Howe resident said beating a traditional football powerhouse like Ontario is a tremendous confidence booster for a smaller province like Nova Scotia.

Godfrey has come a long way in a short time. It was just two years ago he was convinced by a friend to play football in Truro. From there he continued to develop his game and at five-foot-10, 190 pounds he is a presence on the football field.

“We spent a lot of time practising and getting ready for the tournament. We started about six months ago practising every week,” Godfrey said. “We did a lot of strength and conditioning drills during the winter and as we got closer we transitioned onto the field.”

The commitment included twice a week trips to Enfield for practice.

Although it’s still several years away, Godfrey is hoping to play college football. He’s considering transferring to Truro’s Cobequid Educational Centre in Grade 10 so he can play high school football.
