Ride with purpose, engage with fitness

-

Halifax’s fitness family is expanding! One of the latest locations to open its doors and ask you to sweat, SpinCo will open Aug. 12 and asks all those who care to take a fitness journey to enter with an open mind, loads of energy and a desire to be part of the latest fitness community.

Berwick native Taye Landry is responsible for bringing SpinCo to Halifax. A young and vibrant force, Landry found strength in fitness after spending several years in the fashion industry.

“I had an eating disorder so that’s how I got into fitness,” said Landry. Landry fought to retrace her own joy and self-worth, eventually finding herself settled in a healthy fitness routine.

“I needed to just move with purpose. It all has to have meaning.”

Finding a spinning studio that she credits with saving her life, Landry didn’t understand why there wasn’t something like it closer to home. Wanting to make pilgrimage back to the East Coast of Canada, she looked for a way to merge her want of home with her new spin therapy.

SpinCo, the brainchild of Landry’s friend Michelle August, needed to broaden its community and Landry took that idea and ran with it. Buying into the company in October of last year, Landry can’t believe the reception that has been created by SpinCo Halifax thus far.

“Lives have already been changed. We are on a journey together. Everyone is on a different journey every day,” says Landry. “We really focus on the motivational part and changing people’s lives.”

Not wanting to be defined by the four walls of the gym, Landry is leading her 15 instructors to become more than front of class but to have giving back top of mind when it comes to community and charitible outreach with initiatives such as their “Spin It Forward” charity rides, where 100 per cent of their proceeds will go to a charity of choice.

Choosing only from instructors Landry has deemed hungry enough to be part of SpinCo, she hopes those selected will bring more than their fitness experience to SpinCo — their passion for pushing others.

“We can teach you how to ride a bike but you can’t teach passion. I want them to be hungry to help change the world. We need more of that.”

With “Lights Low and Beats High,” Landry is looking forward to launching SpinCo Halifax, hoping to pay it forward for being the movement that saved her.

“You don’t point people in the direction of a gym; you can find that anywhere. It’s the feeling and community people return to time and time again.”
