Bearcats, Wildcats still sparring over fourth

Truro hosts Halifax at TAAC Grounds tonight

-

The Cats are back of the pack. But don’t expect them to be enjoying each other’s company.

Heading into action last night, the Truro Bearcats and Kentville Wildcats sat dead even in the Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League standings, with identical records of five wins and 17 losses.

Kentville was to pay a visit to Dartmouth in action Thursday; the Bearcats will host the Halifax Pelham Molson Canadians this evening.

With the schedule winding down, the Bearcats and Wildcats are in a struggle to secure the fourth and final playoff spot in the five-team league and prolong their seasons.

The Bearcats have a couple of rainouts to make up and, as well as tonight’s contest, a meeting with Halifax at home again Tuesday and a visit to Sydney next weekend for a pair of games against the Sooners. Kentville has Dartmouth at home Sunday, and several other games to make up, as well.

The Sooners (16-4) continued to lead the NSSBL standings, followed by Halifax (14-7) and Dartmouth (13-8) as of Thursday.

Game time for the Bearcats and Canadians tonight at the TAAC Grounds is 7:30 p.m.

First pitch honours

As a special attraction at tonight’s game between Truro and Halifax, 87-year-old Eric McDade is scheduled to throw out the first pitch.

The Parkland Retirement Living resident had it on his bucket list. Actually, it was to throw out the first pitch at a World Series game. But this was good, too.

Dry head to nationals

The Dartmouth Moosehead Dry, as 2016 league champions, will represent Nova Scotia at the 2017 Men’s National Championships.

There will be 10 teams in all competing Aug. 24-27 in Victoria, B.C.
