Hebb in front after Round 1 of Senior championship

- SALT WIRE NETWORK

Mike Hebb got off to a blistering start at the #GolfBeattieStrong Men’s Senior championship hosted by the Truro Golf Club.

The Ashburn Golf Club member holed five birdies en route to a 3-under-par 68 opening round Wednesday to give him a fivestroke lead heading into day two of the three-day event.

Hebb found his groove as the day went on, carding two birdies and no bogeys on the back nine. On the opening nine holes he mustered three birdies but also bogeyed two others.

The leader didn’t shoot over par after the eighth hole and was the only player to submit a belowpar scorecard in the first round.

Stephen Locke of the Truro Golf Club was next, shooting a 2-over-par 73, good enough for sole possession of second, while four other players remained deadlocked for third at 3 over par. Another six golfers were tied for seventh with a 75.

Other area notables included Denis McGuire of the Links at Penn Hills, who was in that logjam at seventh with his 75. Nelson Thompson and Sidney Green of Truro and Mike Henderson of Brookfield were in a six-player tie for 14th at 76.

Despite the space created between Hebb and the field, plenty remained up for grabs.

The tournament’s three lowest combined scores earn a spot on Nova Scotia men’s senior team which is set to compete at the Canadian Seniors Championship.
