Summer program makes science fun

A family program that teaches kids the fun behind science is holding its last session of the summer this month.

Madlab is a free, science-based family program that teaches children about different topics through hands-on experiments and demonstrations.

Held on the last Saturday of each month during the summer, the program focuses on a specific subject in science, and helps kids learn about it in a fun way.

“It is all about the kids trying out new things,” said Megan Cameron, who leads the program.

“They are in a space where they can play and make a mess while also learning about what we are doing, whether it be engineering, biology or more techy stuff.

“Last month we talked about slime, so we discussed molecules and stuff, and then they got to play with homemade slime.”

June’s session taught kids about weather, and allowed them to make rainclouds out of shaving cream and tornados with water bottles.

While the program focuses on educating kids, parents are welcome to join and participate as a family.

This summer’s final Madlab session will be on air flow, and may feature some experiments with kites and balloons. It will be held Saturday, Aug. 26, at 2 p.m., and parents can register anytime.

For those who can’t make it, don’t worry, Cameron is “planning to hold a couple more during the fall,” she said.
