Colchester Highland Games & Gathering this weekend
Events get underway Friday evening with the unveiling of the Colchester Tartan
It’s time to flash the tartan this weekend, as the first Colchester Highland Games & Gathering is held, beginning with a free event Friday evening.
The Colchester County tartan will be revealed during a ceremony that begins around 6:30 p.m. on Friday, in the Truro Civic Square. The celebration will include Clann An Drumma, with Scottish tribal music, fiddlers, ceilidh dancing, highland dancing and refreshments.
Saturday the venue moves to Jennifer Drive ball fields in Bible Hill, with the gates opening at 8 a.m.
The day will include highland dancing, heavyweight competition, Irish dancers, pipes and drums, music – including a onehour performance by Scottish tribal band Clann An Drumma – historical re-enactments, a tactical assault display from the Nova Scotia Highlanders, games for the public to join in, including tug o’ war, children’s games, RCMP dog demonstrations, rafts, clan tents and food vendors.
There will also be a parade of participants from St. David’s United Church, on Pictou Road, to the Jennifer Drive ball fields, at 10:30 a.m. Admission to the games and gathering is $10; children in Grade 5 and under – accompanied by a paying adult – get in free.
During the evening there will be a traditional Scottish Ceilidh dance, for ages 19 and up, at the Holiday Inn. Music will be provided by the Nova Scotia Ceilidh Band and Clann an Drumma.
