Colchester Highland Games & Gathering this weekend

Events get underway Friday evening with the unveiling of the Colchester Tartan

It’s time to flash the tartan this weekend, as the first Colchester Highland Games & Gathering is held, beginning with a free event Friday evening.

The Colchester County tartan will be revealed during a ceremony that begins around 6:30 p.m. on Friday, in the Truro Civic Square. The celebratio­n will include Clann An Drumma, with Scottish tribal music, fiddlers, ceilidh dancing, highland dancing and refreshmen­ts.

Saturday the venue moves to Jennifer Drive ball fields in Bible Hill, with the gates opening at 8 a.m.

The day will include highland dancing, heavyweigh­t competitio­n, Irish dancers, pipes and drums, music – including a onehour performanc­e by Scottish tribal band Clann An Drumma – historical re-enactments, a tactical assault display from the Nova Scotia Highlander­s, games for the public to join in, including tug o’ war, children’s games, RCMP dog demonstrat­ions, rafts, clan tents and food vendors.

There will also be a parade of participan­ts from St. David’s United Church, on Pictou Road, to the Jennifer Drive ball fields, at 10:30 a.m. Admission to the games and gathering is $10; children in Grade 5 and under – accompanie­d by a paying adult – get in free.

During the evening there will be a traditiona­l Scottish Ceilidh dance, for ages 19 and up, at the Holiday Inn. Music will be provided by the Nova Scotia Ceilidh Band and Clann an Drumma.
