Truro Sings tonight
Everyone is invited to raise their voice in the joy of song
The welcome mat is out for anyone who wants to join others at the Marigold Cultural Centre and raise their voice in song this evening, as the first Truro Sings event is held.
“The concept is people getting together to forget their problems, and be connected to others and experience the joy of song,” said Susan Henderson, executive director of the Colchester East Hants Branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA).
The organization has partnered with the Marigold Cultural Centre and the Colchester Community Credit Union to bring the event to the area.
“The benefits of music are well documented and the Marigold loves to work with partners to engage people in social bonding,” said Farida Gabbani, managing director at the Marigold. “We’ll all go in as individuals but leave as a community.”
The song selected for the first event is “Lean On Me” and singers will be led by Philip L. Black. Talent is not required.
“The therapeutic value of song; of joining in song with other people, cannot be underestimated,” said Henderson. “It’s wonderful for your mental health, which is why we wanted to bring this to our community. We know that many people in our community are isolated and feel alone. Everyone is welcome, and for this reason we are offering passes for those who could benefit from this and asking for a monetary donation from those who can afford to pay.”
All proceeds will go toward renovating the CMHA’s new building.
Truro Sings will take place tonight from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., with the doors of the Marigold Cultural Centre opening at 7 p.m.
