Hubtown Boxing Club to hold open house Saturday

Head coach Ted Ash wants people to know boxing is more than just a workout for the body as he opens his doors to the public.

More than just a workout for the body, boxing is a true test of the mind.

That’s the message Ted Ash is conveying as he prepares to open doors to the public at the Hubtown Boxing Club this weekend.

“A big thing is it activates your mind because nobody wants to be a hamster on a wheel,” said Ash, head coach at the local club. “You want to have a challenge, you want to learn; if you don’t learn you can’t grow.”

On Saturday, the club will host an open house at 325 Highway 311 in North River at the Paul Davis Systems building from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is an opportunity for the public to visit the gym, talk to coaches about programs and simply get a feel for what the space has to offer.

Ash, who took over as head coach last November, said the Hubtown club is the ideal place to train both body and mind. Workouts are designed for all levels of fitness and include training in power, speed and coordination.

“It’s a great workout,” he said. “We try to make it fun… it keeps you fit and it keeps you alert.”

Ash said there’s no requirement to spar, and those only interested in the fitness aspect are encouraged to join the gym.

“Come just for the workout,” he said. “And we tailor that so that’s exactly what it is; it’s noncontact.

“There’s no pressure at all, so people can come in and relax and still get a good workout and all the benefits of it.”

Bible Hill’s Jeremiah Mosher, 13, has been boxing for three years and said he enjoys being at the gym for a couple of reasons.

“Meeting new friends and being able to learn how to defend myself,” he said.

Mosher has two fights to his credit and earned his first win via

unanimous decision on a July 1 card at the Halifax Forum.

“I’m getting better at it every day.”

Training at the Hubtown club takes place Monday through Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. The club will offer two new programs this year. A youth program for kids aged 8 to 11 will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 7 p.m., while a women’s fitness class has been added on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 7 p.m.

While the current membership is relatively small, Ash said he’s confident the gym can be successful and he’s looking forward to showcasing the club during Saturday’s open house.

“I’m very passionate about it and we’re going to take it places,” he said.

“We’re going to increase the ugly around here,” he added with a laugh.
