Nova Scotia country music star humbled, shocked by recognition

Nova Scotian county music star Andrew Frelick has had an unforgettable year — and his successes aren’t stopping yet.

The Bridgewater native is nominated for five awards at the 2017 Josie Music Awards in Nashville, Tenn., on Sunday.

The Josie Music Awards is an all-genre music award show held once a year in Nashville, honouring musicians from all around the world.

“It’s humbling . . . I’m just still in shock,” said Frelick. “This year was a great year for me. It’s been one blessing after the next.

“The first year I was (at the Josie Music Awards) I was one of only two Canadians,” he continued. “The second year it grew and there were three Nova Scotians. This year, there is going to be five Nova Scotians and like 10 Canadians. Just to be part of that growth, it’s an honour and also so exciting.”

In his first year attending the awards in 2015, he came home empty handed. But last year, Frelick was nominated in seven categories at the awards, winning modern country male artist song of the year and the Country Blast Radio charting award.

“If you would have been there and seen my face, you’d know how surprised I was to win,” he said. “It’s just such an honour to be up there with musicians who have already had such great country music careers, and ones who are just starting out but who are really great.”

This year, Frelick is nominated in the modern country category for song of the year for When I Was Little, male artist of the

year, entertainer of the year, male vocalist of the year and collaboration of the year for Till I Found Love with Faith Numada.

“It’s the main ones (that I’d be most surprised about winning); country album of the year and male artist of the year,” said Frelick. “Those are the big ones and they’re factoring in so many colleagues and it’s been narrowed down from tens of thousands artists.”

And Frelick says it’s the nomination

for collaboration of year that is getting him the most excited.

“That duet, we recorded it on my last album, and we performed together live last year,” he said. “It’s pretty cool because it’s a song that we wrote over Skype together. A year later we are performing and recording, and then a year after that we are nominated for an award.”

On top of being nominated for five awards, Frelick will also

be performing at the 2017 Josie Music Awards hosted at the Nissan Stadium — the football stadium that is home to the Tennessee Titans and can seat more than 69,000 fans.

“It should be a lot of fun,” said Frelick. “I try to maximize all my trips to Nashville. So, I’ll be doing the awards . . . performing there . . . and I’ll also be performing at (some big local bars), and then getting in the studio and recording my third EP while I’m there.”
