The prime minister says he is deeply saddened by the death of a man he describes as a tireless advocate for Canadians. Chan, 50, leaves his wife, Jean Yip and their three sons, Nathaniel, Ethan and Theodore as well as his parents and other family members. Trudeau offered his deepest condolences to all.

Chan learned he had nasopharyngeal carcinoma not long after he first won his Torontoarea seat of ScarboroughAgincourt in a 2014 byelection.

He revealed the cancer had returned in March 2016.
