Top dog Kingston, the caring canine, receives volunteer recognition
With his big brown eyes and his wagging tail, Kingston can often get a smile from someone when no one else can.
The Salvation Army recently presented the four-year-old yellow Lab with a certificate for his volunteer efforts.
“He helps out a lot at the store, greeting people and cheering them up,” said Philip Richardson, one of his human family members. “He loves kids, is very gentle and he seems to know which people need him.
“A couple of months ago I was doing a pick-up at a seniors’ home and he went right up to an elderly lady in a wheelchair. As soon as he went up to her she just came alive.”
Philip and his son David got Kingston when he was a pup. He was the last of his litter waiting for a home, so they’re convinced he was meant to be with them.
“He’s a wonderful dog and loves people and playing,” said Philip. “He loves going in a vehicle and travels with me in the van a lot. We couldn’t have a better dog.”
Kingston also helps Salvation Army staff. Tanya Boates, who works at the thrift shop, said her days would be more difficult if the dog wasn’t around.
“I look forward to seeing him every morning,” she said. “Almost every morning we share a banana and he makes me feel better.
“I don’t get to see my own dog as much as I used to so it’s really
special to have Kingston around.”
The dog makes a visit to the thrift shop, at 966 Prince Street, most mornings.
