Man arrested after body found

- BY STEVE BRUCE & IAN FAIRCLOUGH HALIFAX CHRONICLE HERALD

RCMP took a suspect into custody after a man’s body was found outside a home in New Minas on Sunday.

Cpl. Jennifer Clarke, RCMP spokeswoman, said police were called to a residence on Lockhart Drive at 9:25 a.m.

“The death is being classified as suspicious at this time,” Clarke said in a news release.

A 30-year-old man was arrested but charges had not been laid as of late Sunday afternoon, she said.

The death is being investigated by the RCMP’s Southwest Nova major crimes unit.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact RCMP by phone at 902-679-5561 or submit an anonymous tip to Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers.

Neighbours told The Chronicle Herald they heard loud voices in the front yard of the home at 77 Lockhart Dr. shortly before Mounties and paramedics arrived. Derrick and Donna Salsman live in the home and also own a piece of property next to it.

Neighbours said the husband is a retired Nova Scotia Power employee and sells blueberries and pumpkins that he grows in his own garden.

They said the couple have a 30-year-old son who also lives at the house and has been in trouble with the law.

The son was arrested in April 2012 after RCMP executed a search warrant in New Minas and seized cocaine, marijuana and hashish with a street value of more than $14,000, a bulletproof vest, brass knuckles and cash.

On Sunday, an RCMP officer stood inside the police tape at the west end of the two properties, where a rough driveway appears to lead down to a two-bay garage.

The house itself was hidden from view by trees and shrubs.

RCMP called in Transportation Department employees around lunchtime to block off part of Lockhart Drive and nearby Cornwallis Avenue.
